Thieves & Ruins
I was astonished by the beauty of what was left of this once wealthy ancient Kingdom, it reminded me of Angkor Wat. This is a kingdom established by King Ramathibodi I in 1351 and was unfortunately burned down by the Burmese in 1767 which they vandalized many Buddha images and heads. The Historic City is now a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991.
There is a theory about the entwined Buddha head in the roots of a tree; one of them is that the tree grew around the head when the temple was abandoned, another is that a thief moved the head to hide it and after doing so the thief was no longer able to move the head beyond its walls in the temple leaving the Buddha head where it is currently surrounded by tree roots which have entwined it.
